\"Nixon<\/a>Time for a\u00a0quick lesson in social media. \u00a0We’re all aware of it but I thought I’d share my most recent reminder about just how much privacy there really is once you hang yourself out on the interweebs.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

SOCIAL MEDIA:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

noun<\/b><\/span>, ( usually used with a plural verb<\/i>) <\/b>Digital Technology<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1.\u00a0 <\/span>websites and other online means of communication that are used by large groups of people to share information and to develop social and professional contacts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s back up the bus.<\/span><\/p>\n

I walked into what I thought was an informal chat about the upcoming <\/span>redacted <\/span><\/del>season at the local<\/span> redacted<\/span><\/del> and my role as a <\/span>redacted<\/del><\/span> inst\u2026maybe I\u2019ll just not finish that so it doesn\u2019t have to be <\/span>redacted<\/del>\u00a0 <\/span>too\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"ship's<\/a>So, imagine my surprise at being asked why I was saying negative things about redacted redacted redacted\u00a0<\/span><\/del>on social media. Cue the sound of a ship\u2019s telegraph ringing full stop. CA-CHING CA-CHING After a few minutes of trying to find out what it was I\u2019d said and on which of the\u00a0 <\/span>platforms I said it, I learned some folk have different definitions of what social media is.<\/span><\/p>\n

The details are not important. The essential point is that at any given time anything written on any one of the many splendid things that make up Social Media can come back to bite you in the redacted<\/span><\/del>.<\/span><\/p>\n

We all know that.<\/span><\/p>\n

I am scrupulous about what I say\u00a0on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and even these bloggy things regarding places I work and\/or play. \u00a0Seriously.\u00a0 <\/span>It isn\u2019t arrogance or the firm belief millions of folk hang upon my every word. I know the stats (Hi Joyce) about who reads \"buster<\/a>anything I write. (Hi Mark\u2014 what do you want for supper?)<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the people you know and who know you (How\u2019s your day going, Rob?) that you need to worry about. Nope, its because, no matter how tightly you lock it down, everything online is public. For emphasis let’s repeat that:\u00a0everything online is public<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Facebook has security upon security features. I have a filter on my Twitter account so I\u00a0 <\/span>approve any follower requests. But redacted<\/span><\/del> \u00a0<\/span>happens and, knowing that, I make an effort to avoid putting information out there I wouldn\u2019t want an eavesdropper to pick up.<\/span><\/p>\n

Turns out in\u00a0this case the medium was an email which is not something I put in the \"bridge<\/a>category of social media. This email sent was sent some time ago to me as president of the redacted<\/span><\/del> (w&o)\u00a0league. I replied directly to the sender indicating I wasn\u2019t really president of that league anymore but, while you\u2019re asking, here\u2019s my take on the subject. Yes, I checked to make sure I hadn\u2019t selected \u2018reply all\u2019.\u00a0 <\/span>Unfortunately, I also cc\u2019d it to the current\u00a0 <\/span>president of w&o\u00a0league and she decided to circulate it to a few more folk. Who cc\u2019d it to a few more and we have a shampoo commercial and, arguably, something closer to (but still not really) social media.<\/span><\/p>\n

Was this redacted<\/span><\/del>\u00a0reply in a negative tone? Nope. Did I say snarky stuff about the redacted redacted redacted<\/span><\/del> or about anyone associated with redacted redacted redacted<\/span><\/del>? Not in the least. Did I make an offhand joke about priorities and bureaucracy? Maybe. But just a little one without any reference, even implied, to anyone in particular.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"kick_cat_by_pearlgraygallery-d80tjk1<\/a>Turns out there are people who read every single item in a 4 page monster reply thread email. And one of them was having a very bad day. And guess who was the cat on the step when that person got home.<\/span><\/p>\n

I love being a redacted\u00a0redacted<\/span><\/del>\u2026 at redacted redacted redacted<\/span><\/del>. And I would never say anything on said social media accounts that could be interpreted as derogatory or dismissive about it or any of the people therein contained.<\/span><\/p>\n

In future I will be as equally\u00a0circumspect in my correspondence as I am in social media.<\/span><\/p>\n

And so, dear reader, the lesson for today is once you hit \u2018send\u2019 even emailz got sharp little teeth.\"buster<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
