{"id":2569,"date":"2011-11-28T01:00:41","date_gmt":"2011-11-28T09:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/?p=2569"},"modified":"2011-11-22T15:31:10","modified_gmt":"2011-11-22T23:31:10","slug":"2569","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/?p=2569","title":{"rendered":"Cherish the small things"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>I&#8217;m not here right now so I thought I&#8217;d leave y&#8217;all another one of my columns from the way back time when Black Press used free lance writers (&amp; actually paid them but that is a grump for another day).\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As the family vacation unfolded outside the station wagon window, I was reading a quirky little book entitled, <strong>Cool Dead People: Obituaries of Real Folks We Wish We\u2019d <a href=\"http:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Clairol-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2585\" title=\"Clairol 3\" src=\"http:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Clairol-3-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Clairol-3-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Clairol-3.jpg 358w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/a>Met a Little Sooner<\/strong> by Jane O\u2019Boyle.\u00a0 As the title implies it is about the people who never grabbed headlines but nonetheless contributed to the comfort or happiness of a great many people during their time on this side of the sod.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These everyday celebrities receive a full page about where they\u2019re from (almost exclusively the United States) and a bit about what made them interesting to the author. Shirley Polykoff, died June 4, 1998, was the advertising genius behind the Clairol ad campaigns \u2013 \u201cDoes she, or doesn\u2019t she?\u2026Hair color so natural only her hairdresser knows for sure.\u201d\u00a0 Apparently, as the book reveals, Shirley did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stanley Terrick died on July 19, 1999. A photographer for Look magazine, you\u2019ll know him best as the man who took the picture of<a href=\"http:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/john-john-under-desk.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2586\" title=\"john john under desk\" src=\"http:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/john-john-under-desk-260x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"208\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/john-john-under-desk-260x300.jpg 260w, https:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/john-john-under-desk.jpg 507w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 208px) 100vw, 208px\" \/><\/a> John Kennedy Jr. peeking out from under his daddy\u2019s desk in the Oval Office.\u00a0 Ms. O\u2019Boyle notes that ironically Mr. Terrick\u2019s demise preceded John Jr.\u2019s tragic flight into the waters off Martha\u2019s Vineyard by 3 days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And then came Dr. Peggy Rummel. She took her medical degree and sought out an isolated town in Georgia because she wanted to practice rural medicine.\u00a0 Her own words were, \u201cWe need to be proud of the little places and not assume that because it\u2019s small, it\u2019s inadequate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the short time she had before cancer claimed her at the age of 43 on May 7, 1999, she cared for the 6,400 residents of Colquitt County, raised eight foster children of her own, involved herself in the local high school events and ran the county\u2019s 38 bed hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Even reading the good doctor\u2019s thumbnail sketch was tiring. I mean there are times I find having to change the dog\u2019s water on a daily basis more than I can manage. But then again, I don\u2019t think it is necessary to invite the entire village in for popcorn and a video in order to cherish what we have in \u201clittle places\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In fact just visiting Edmonton was enough for me to look forward to returning to <a href=\"http:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/george-bailey.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2584\" title=\"george-bailey\" src=\"http:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/george-bailey-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/george-bailey-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/george-bailey.jpg 468w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Esquimalt. Edmonton is huge and getting bigger. Since I left, \u2018lo those many years ago, it has changed in more ways than I can describe. Well there is one way:\u00a0 who remembers the scene in \u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful Life\u201d where George Bailey gets to see his home town turned into the warm up act for Sodom and\/or Gomorrah?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Well, maybe it isn\u2019t that bad. Mostly I found my old hometown to be unfamiliar when we would venture on our own \u2013 except when we went on a pilgrimage to the Pyrogy Hut on 118<sup>th<\/sup> street \u2013 but entering the homes of friends and family it was like slipping into old slippers. A big barbecue was not chilled at all by the clouds. My cousin Jack took a few precious moments away from cuddling and feeding his new grand-daughter to give me a bear hug and tell the latest jokes. His attention was pretty much focused on this new role of proud grampa and everyone enjoyed cooing over his shoulder at the latest family star.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was good to pull our little trailer over the top of the hill at Lampson and Old Esquimalt when all the traveling was done. After the late August heat the air seemed to turn just a little cooler as we crested it. Our neighbor stopped in to bring us our mail he\u2019d collected. We chatted with another one who is the block watch captain. My youngest immediately wanted to zip off to play with her friend down the street and the oldest was already on the phone to her friend before I\u2019d got the key out of the lock. This is home.<a href=\"http:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Rowe-and-willow-crop-one.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2587\" title=\"Rowe and willow crop one\" src=\"http:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Rowe-and-willow-crop-one-300x268.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Rowe-and-willow-crop-one-300x268.jpg 300w, https:\/\/suddenalarm.blaseckie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Rowe-and-willow-crop-one.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is easy to see the big things but I think Dr. Rummel is right: it is important to understand that even though something is small it can still be important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cherish the moment and the small things. We were barely home from Edmonton when my sister phoned to tell me cousin Jack had just suffered a fatal heart attack. Such sad news, yes, but we knew he had treasured his time as \u201cGrandpa Jack\u201d and when the angel came he was with friends, in the middle of telling a joke.
